If the hands have much stronger lume than the hour markers, chances are that they’ve been replaced with Super-Luminova service hands and are not original. Tritium dials use radioactive material to activate the luminous paint, which Luminova uses natural light to "charge" the paint. The Tritium dials were phased out in 1998/1999, and most Tritium models will have little or no glow left now.

My recommendation would be to look for an early 2000s model with super luminova, SEL, and lug holes, the best of all worlds with the 16570. But there are also small luminous squares every 2.5 minutes too. This results in 24 glow-in-the-dark accents.Over the next two decades of production, the Rolex Explorer II 16570 underwent a few enhancements. Most notably, Caliber 3185 was switched out for Caliber 3186 and tritium luminescence eventually made way for LumiNova and then Super-LumiNova.
